S Paulís in Context

Back to Church People

S Paulís, has always had close links with the neighbouring Anglo-Catholic parishes.††

The parish of S Paul is currently combined with the parish of S Michael & All Angels in a single Benefice.

The church of S Michael & All Angels (1862) was initially linked by its first priest having been a curate at S. Paul's for 11 years under Fr. Arthur Wagner. The churches of The Annunciation (1864) and S Bartholomew's (1872) are under the patronage of the Wagner Trustees and in early days were served by priests from S Paul's.  S Paulís now has the Society for the Maintenance of the Faith as patrons.

Other churches of the same tradition with whom there have long been close links include S Barnabas, Hove, and S Martin's, Brighton, which was founded by Fr. Arthur Wagner and his family in memory of their father, Fr. Henry Wagner. Neighbouring churches include S Nicholas and the Chapel Royal.

Safe Space

Saint Paulíswelcomes Safe Space as part of our mission to serve those of our parish. We provide the Holy Spirit chapel on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the year. Run and staffed by YMCA DownsLink Group in conjunction with British Red Cross, Safe Space cares for the vulnerable and distressed in the vicinity of West Street.

We are open to all. It is a safe space for those who are overwhelmed and require time and care to regain their bearings. Sussex Police and Doormen refer those who are incapacitated due to alcohol or drugs, who have lost their friends or who, for a variety of reasons are unable to get home.

The Rt Revd. Graham James, Bishop of Norwich, Dr John Hind, the Bishop of Chichester and
the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, visiting the Safe Space in 2008.

Of the hundreds of people who accessed Safe Space last year, almost everyone was successfully treated on site. Police officers were able to continue their work, where otherwise they would have had to stay with those lost or incapacitated to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Pressure is relieved on the A&E department ofSussex General.British Red Cross can provide a level of medical care which prevents hospital admissions andambulance call outs. This represents a significant financial saving to the NHS.

Safe Space is supported by Brighton and Hove Council and other community organisations. Street Pastors who patrol the city centre use Safe Space as a haven. The benefit to the community is such that Safe Space may be rolled out to East Street, Saint Jamesí and Pride.

Saint Paulís is pleased to offer our resources to the parish.
